About SASH

Service Animals Serving Hawaii is a 501(c)(3) charity that our community lovingly refers to as “SASH” because when a dog graduates from our extraordinary service animal training program he or she wears proudly a sash that reads “Service Animal.” In case you have had little or no experience with service animals, their role in the aid of individuals with disabilities dates back to the 1920’s, but, in the State of Hawaii, their numbers were understandably few for many years.

It took the passage of the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990 to formalize the rules applying to public accommodations and businesses when an individual with a disability seeks entry with a service animal.

SASH was formed to enable more Hawaiian residents to benefit from having a service animal.
